The young American woman Catherine Mulligan marries and follow her husband to Iran where she converts voluntary to Islam. After being raped in her own home by a neighbor, she is false accused of adultery and therefore sentenced to death by stoning. An Iranian writer named Sarah Azimi share a cell with her during her imprisonment and after her release from prison she tries to save Catherine by telling her story to the world.
