It concerns the desire of the Greeks for liberation, the role of foreign forces, international diplomacy, and the friction among the Greeks themselves. The main character is Manto Mavrogenous. The Ypsilantis brothers, Ioannis Kapodistrias, Chancellor Metternich, and members of the Filiki Eteria Nikolaos Skoufas, Emmanouil Xanthos, and Athanasios Tsakalov play an important role.
