Charlie Hebdo and Free Speech in Europe
In January 2015, Islamist fanatics attacked the offices of a well-known satirical magazine in Paris and a Kosher supermarket. The resulting carnage led to the deaths of a number of magazine staff, innocent shoppers and police officers as well as the gunmen themselves. These attacks were said to be a direct assault on free speech in France and Europe, the leaders of which resolved to stand firm and not allow the terrorists to win. Yet even as they rallied and protested in defence of free speech, the same governments were stamping on it with the arrest - yet again - of the controversial comedian Dieudonné. This short documentary cuts through their cant, lies and sheer hypocrisy to paint an honest picture of free speech in Europe, free speech for permissible opinions only.
