Summer 1945. The Soviet command transfers some of the troops freed up in the West to the Far East for an offensive against the Japanese Army in Manchuria. Aleksey Khlamov, a Russian émigré infected with smallpox, infiltrates one of the divisions. He reveals that the Japanese military held him in the so-called "Unit 731," where viral and bacterial weapons were being developed. To verify the fugitive's testimony, a reconnaissance team led by Kravtsov, Rodin, and Chen, a resident in Japan, is sent behind Japanese lines. Colonel Takeshi Tanaguchi, head of the laboratory's security, does everything in his power to prevent Soviet troops from discovering the secret developments. Novices from a nearby Buddhist monastery come to the reconnaissance team's aid.
