Three months before the film's release, Star Wars was an absolute mess. With only one special effect shot approved, the film had to be edited with massive gaps left for the SFX team to hopefully fill. To get some feedback, a "placeholder" version of Star Wars was shown during preview screenings. This cobbled together edit consisted of clips from other films, photos of storyboard, temp music, and raw studio sound. All of this was no more evident than during the famous "Trench Run" sequence.
