A Life Less Empty
Emotionally stuck and isolated on his quiet reservation, Simon's life is suddenly enlivened by the arrival of Karen, an enigmatic outsider, who challenges him to make a big change. Simon, a 25-year-old Indigenous man, lives in his Uncle's house on their quiet Reservation. A new variant of Covid-19 has caused another wave of shutdowns and Uncle and Simon have jobs guarding the Reservation gate and taking temperatures of those entering their community. A car slowly rolls in and there is a passed-out young woman in the driver's seat. Simon takes the mysterious woman to Uncle's house so she can sleep-off whatever is ailing her. In the morning, Uncle and Anne, the community nurse, inform Simon that this mystery woman is named Karen, and that they were warned by a "concerned Band member" that she has Covid and should not be allowed onto their Reservation. Simon and Karen must quarantine themselves together in Uncle's humble house. As Simon and Karen reluctantly bond, they share stories with one another of what led them to this moment. Simon tells the story of the 'one that got away.' Karen tells of her heartbreak over her recently deceased lover. What they are leaving out of their stories are very important details that paint the full picture of why each of their lives are currently derailed. Through their newfound connection, can each of these broken young humans find their life's true path?
