Alice Cunningham: To Say No
It was an absolute blast to work on Alice's latest M/V, we had a great time shooting "Just Friends" but this time we went for a completely different style and aesthetic to match the tone and nuances of Alice's track - here is 'To Say No'. I was inspired by Wong Kar Wai's use of skip-printing, purposeful undercranking of the camera to create a trippy/disjointed effect which relates to the song's lyrics. Furthermore, the use of ultra wide fish-eyes (8mm and 14mm lenses) really creates a distinctly jarring and introspective feel whilst in broad hot sunlight. Few reflectors used here and various settings to control this extremely blasty light, not to mention it being a very hot day, but we all pumped and committed to the shoot. Also wanted to emulate old VISION2 200T, and added some 35mm grain, which isn't that noticeable on a small mobile screen, but adds depth and tonality when viewed correctly.
