Scarlett is the Daughter of Death, living in a 16th century fantasy version of Venice. A mysterious group simply known as Corpus selects a new embodiment of Death every few generations. In the group's selection of the new Death, there is a rise of an infamous Necromancer that seeks immortality along with his Undead Five compatriots. The Predecessor Death tasks his daughter, Scarlett, to save the world and stop the Necromancer from bringing wanton death and destruction as well as obtaining the Black Grimoire; the spellbook that would consolidate his powers. With Death's help by gifts of supernatural powers and the mythical scythe known as the Moonblade, Scarlett sets out to avenge her lover's untimely death, to save her father and the Living Mortal Realm.
