Carly Simon and Richard Garcia in Carly Simon: It Happens Everyday (1984)

Carly Simon: It Happens Everyday

1984
Music

Inspired by the paintings of Edward Hopper, the film opens with the washed out ambiance of a diner. Carly Simon sits at the counter, mesmerized by the activity of day-to-day life passing by the store-front window. As her thoughts of the recent break-up of a relationship interrupt her reverie, she begins to sing. With a melancholy and nostalgic lyric, Carly remembers her lover through happy and sad flashbacks. These scenes dissolve into slow motion images of a young girl twirling -- which presents undertones of an innocence passed, yet remembered. The blend of flashbacks, the young girl twirling and Carly remembering in the diner, provide a lyrical and wistful quality which embraces the pace, mood and color of this short, but moving ballad. The piece concludes with a montage sequence of the girl twirling away, suggesting to the audience that the innocence of the past "happens everyday," but is known only through memory and reflection.
