Eric Mitchell is an accountant who has just won pre-selection to be the new (fictitious) Australasian Party candidate for the seat of Mitchell. He sees a UFO on the beach. His wife Helen advises him to be quiet. He a son, Larry, who wants to be in a band, and a friend, Arte Brown. Eric hosts a party that night at his house. Guests include a wealthy donor, Larry's girlfriend and three key political figures Eric must deal with: a drunken journalist and speech writer,Whit Morgan; Eric's campaign director, Barney Kline; a party figure, Smith. Larry plays rock music and dances and Barney tells Eric to order his son to cut his hair. News about the sighing leaks to the press. It was Morgan. Eric confronts Morgan who admit he leaked it for money. Eric punches him. Eric decides to run as an independent. Smithy volunteers to be his campaign manager. Barney abuses them all as they see the UFO.
