Maître Daniel Rock
In Felsenbourg, at the foot of the Vosges mountains, lives the old blacksmith Daniel Rock with his two sons, Gaspard and Christian, and his daughter Thérèse. There is also the family of Frantz Benedum, the miller, whose son Louis is not displeasing to Thérèse Rock. One day, news arrives: the railroad is going to pass through the nearby mountains. After some deliberation, a dozen local dignitaries, including Father Nicklausse and the mayor, accept the idea of this change. Only Daniel Rock vehemently opposes this intrusion of progress, which will disrupt village life.
