L'argent des pauvres

1914
ComedyDrama

Mr. Villiers, a large stockbroker who has suffered heavy losses on the stock market, is also concerned about the extravagance of his son André. Unbeknownst to his parents, André is a friend of the actress Yvette, from the Variétés. He therefore unenthusiastically welcomes the charming Denise de Nive, whom his mother has intended for him. He has many other worries, because the modest resources his parents allow him do not allow him to rule Yvette's heart alone. Fate puts his conscience to a severe test; by chance, he finds himself holding a sum of 100,000 francs, from a charity of which his mother is the treasurer. The temptation is strong: he cannot resist it and leaves in the company of Yvette, who happily and unscrupulously gobbles up the poor's money. Mrs. Villiers, distraught by this unexpected blow, seeks to save her son's honor. Who to contact: her husband, no question. Relatives, when approached, shy away. She then thinks of the stockbroker Bilman, a big business magnate, who pursues her with his assiduity. But she had recently chased away this seducer, who had behaved like a boor, like a lackey. Bilman, sensing that he was about to have his revenge, welcomed her very kindly and readily gave her a check for 100,000 francs. But, give and take: he demanded in exchange from Mrs. Villiers a letter that was most compromising for her honor as a woman. He sent this letter to her husband, and Hélène, chased away like a guilty person, left for Africa, a Red Cross nurse, with her little protege Denise, who, despite everything, loved André and wanted to try to forget him. The latter, unaware of the catastrophe he has caused, leads a carefree and joyful life, while to distract himself from his pain, Mr. Villiers travels. Chance brings him into contact with his son, who learns from him the fatal consequences of his fault, for Mr. Villiers has discovered the truth too late, and is actively seeking his wife. As for André, he enlists to redeem his fault, and in Morocco, he heroically seeks death. One evening during the battle, he is brought back seriously wounded to the hospital, where he recognizes his mother in the nurse who is treating him. Needless to say, he has no trouble obtaining her forgiveness, and the mother and son soon return to the home rebuilt after the burst of fire.
