After long four years of war, former shepherd Foma Korshunov returns to his native village. He is appointed to the chairmen of the Council, which causes concern among well-to-do Cossacks. Through the neighbors, he is offered money to buy a small farm, but it is clear to Foma that the enemies of the new power want to get rid of him. Korshunov's son Mishutka, nicknamed "Nakhalenok", wants to be like his father in everything. When the Red Army entered the village, he begged the commander of the detachment with tears in his eyes to take him with him.
