Le plus heureux des trois
Marjavel puts up his friend Ernest, whom he judges to be a little unwise, but who is nonetheless the lover of his wife Hermance. On Marjavel's mantelpiece is a stag's head that serves as a hiding place for Ernest and Hermance's correspondence. A couple of Alsatian servants enter Marjavel's service. The man, Krampach, married Lisbeth, a lost girl but who owned 5,000 francs. An indelicate leech merchant got his hands on this sum and ran off with it, which is why the couple has come to Paris. In the meantime, the ex-leech merchant has become a carriage driver and has transported not only Ernest and Hermance but also Marjavel and Ginginette. They all have reason to fear his indiscretions. What's more, it turns out that the accomplice in Lisbeth's sin is none other than... Ernest.
