At the end of the 19th century, in a mountain village, a widow of a ruler, Nikitas Psychopedas, meets a beautiful peasant girl, Vangelio, at the fountain and is impressed by her beauty. His father has long pressed him to remarry, so he sends his buzz, Buzotis, to ask her father, who is a poor craftsman. Vangelio, despite being in love with a young shepherd, Demos, agrees to become Nikita's wife.
