American soldier Johnny Haines remains in Europe after the World War, and marries a German girl named Hilda Schultzenbach. Returning to his hometown, Johnny is dismayed to find bitter prejudice against Germans, particularly from his own father, the town mayor. When the mayor is assigned to award his son a medal for bravery, Johnny publicly denounces his father's false patriotism and inability to forget the past. Later, the mayor realizes his error and accepts Johnny's bride.
