The film takes place in Moscow after the collapse of the USSR. A grandfather and grandson live in an old Moscow apartment. The grandson is a student, and the grandfather is a former KGB officer, half-mad, a survivor of war and the camps, a man of great suffering in his old age who fancies himself a KGB investigator whose greatest pleasure is to force someone to confess to treason. Out of love for his grandfather, the grandson maintains the situation of perpetual interrogation, inviting *clients* to the apartment from time to time. These games would be quite harmless if one day a real gangster hadn't wandered into the old man's apartment.
