In search of a hot story, investigative journalist Walter Roland and photographer Bertie Engelhardt get into contact with two young defectors from the CSSR. When one of the two refugees is shot, Walter and Bertie try to uncover the motives behind the crime. However, by doing so, they soon get into mortal danger themselves because as it turns out, several secret services, including the CIA and the BND, are involved in the affair - and they are not interested in publicity.
