The famous Marriage Market is about to take place in Palánk, Transylvania. János Gergely has just returned from Canada with his stepdaughter, Lucretia, who is very interested in the folk tradition in question. Meanwhile, Dr. Kiss, as Peter Hadai's legal representative, would like to collect a debt owed to Lucretia's father, but Gergely refuses to honor the demand. The venue of the Marriage Market is the tavern. With her maid Biri, Lukrécia also visits the bar in folk costume. Hadai dresses up as a peasant and marries Lucretia. It is only in Pest that when they discover that the marriage is valid.
