Member of ver.di and AWO, among others; from 1986 to 1998 member, deputy chairman and chairman of various supervisory and administrative boards of municipal holding companies, e.g. energy supply, transport companies, savings bank, state bank, municipal theater, employment company.

Since 1969 member of the SPD; 1968 to 1970 in the student parliament and university senates; since 1970 in the SPD sub-district executive Giessen, 1978 to 1979 in the district council, 1988 to 2004 chairman of the sub-district Giessen, since 1990 in the SPD district executive Hessen-Süd, 1993 to 1995 in the SPD state executive Hessen. 1979 to 1985 member of the district council.
