Iowa native James Levi "Big Dane" Jacobsen (1940-2013) was the father of actor-musician Todd "Dane" Jacobsen and the maternal uncle of writer-director Scott Allen Nollen. His other sons, Troy and Tyler, often collaborated on film and musical projects with their brother and cousin, during the late 1970s and early 1980s.

Jim's one acting appearance came in the short Western "The Silver Kid" (1979), in which he proved he was quite a scene stealer, as "Red," a notorious gunslinger. He also was considered to play John Wayne in "The Ward Bond Story," a Nollen project that was written but never filmed.
