Mattia Epifani was born in Lecce in 1985 and has been working as a film director since 2010. His films have been selected by some of the most prestigious international festivals, including the Clermont-Ferrand International Short Film Festival, IDFA, Hot Docs, Slamdance Film Festival, Torino Film Festival, Göteborg International Film Festival, and Cinema Vérité.

Over the years, his work has explored the boundaries between documentary and fiction, combining a strong visual identity with a deep attention to human stories and ethical complexity. His first feature documentary, Rockman (2011), won Best Film at the Visioni Fuori Raccordo Film Festival and Best Documentary InMed.doc at the Sole Luna Doc Film Festival. In 2015 he directed Il Successore (The successor), which received the Cipputi Award at the 33rd Torino Film Festival, a Special Mention at the Ischia Film Festival, and was selected in competition at IDFA, Hot Docs, and Slamdance.

With Et in terra Pacis (2018), Epifani returned to short filmmaking, presenting the film in competition at the 36th Torino Film Festival and earning the Rai Cinema Channel Award at the European Film Festival of Lecce. In 2021 he directed God Dress You, selected for the International Competition at Clermont-Ferrand and shortlisted for the 2022 Nastro d'Argento Awards.

His most recent work, A luci spente (Lights off- Loris Stecca's Neverending Fight, 2025), received the BPER Special Mention - Biografilm Italia at the Biografilm Festival 2025, confirming his distinctive voice in contemporary Italian documentary cinema.
