The Jim Carroll Band was born in San Diego by chance and Patti Smith. On May 15, 1978, The Patti Smith Group was booked at the California Theatre in San Diego. When the opening act didn't show, Patti brought Jim Carroll on stage to read/rap/rant his poetry backed by the PSG. Back in San Francisco, Jim Carroll joined the Bay Area Band who became the Jim Carrol Band and began performing at local clubs. With a lot of help from Keith Richards they secured a record deal with Atlantic/ATCO and released their debut album "Catholic Boy" in January 1980. At first JCB included Brian Linsley and Terrell Wynn on guitars, Steve Linsley on bass and Wayne Woods on drums. Their three album deal with Atlantic/ATCO/WEA ended in 1983 with the release of "I Write Your Name". During the following years the JCB became more or less Jim Carroll with guest musicians.
