Jackie Eberle was an ace goofyfoot surfer from Hawaii. Known for his lean build and exceptional agility, Eberle was the first surfer at Waimea Bay to perform a fade take-off which entails a surfer angling toward the breaking point of a wave before swoop turning back toward the shoulder. Jackie won the 1965 Hawaiian state championship surfing contest and placed fourth at the first inaugural Duke Kahanamoku Invitational Surf Contest that same year. Eberle went on to place seventh at the 1967 Duke Kahanamoku Invitational Surf Contest. Alas, Jackie was also one of the surfing community's original drug casualties and ultimately wound up in an institution because of his substance abuse issues.
