Chetan Kumar - also known by the name Chetan Ahimsa - is an Indian-American actor who has carved a distinctive path in Kannada cinema, theatre and social activism. Raised in Chicago by parents originally from Karnataka - his father a surgeon and his mother an anaesthesiologist - he maintained a strong connection to his cultural roots, even as he grew up in the United States. After finishing his education at Yale University with a degree in South Asian Studies emphasizing comparative theatre, he earned a Fulbright Scholarship and moved to Karnataka in 2005 to study rural life, folk theatre and traditional performing arts.

Soon after arriving in India, Chetan worked as a teacher at a village school near Mysuru and became involved in theatre with the group Vistara, performing in plays that deepened his connection with Kannada culture - a background that would shape his approach to acting. His film debut came in 2007 with Aa Dinagalu, a gritty underworld drama that brought him acclaim and won him the Udaya Film Award for Best Debut Actor, establishing him as a fresh and serious talent.

Over the years, Chetan has taken on a variety of roles - from the intense and brooding to the emotionally charged. In 2009’s Birugaali and 2010’s Suryakaanti, he explored action and romance; his most celebrated performance came in 2013 with Myna, where he played a college student in a complex love story - a role that earned him wide recognition and solidified his place in Sandalwood.

Yet acting has never been his sole pursuit. Deeply committed to social justice and activism, Chetan identifies as an Ambedkarite and has often voiced strong stances on issues like caste, marginalization, indigenous and tribal rights, LGBTQIA equality, and farmers’ and workers’ welfare. His willingness to speak truth to power has, at times, drawn controversy - in 2023, he was arrested over a tweet critical of religious-nationalist rhetoric, and his Overseas Citizenship status came under scrutiny.

Despite the turbulence, Chetan remains unapologetic about his beliefs. He continues to straddle the worlds of art and activism, using his theatre and film background not just to entertain, but to shine a spotlight on social issues, giving voice to those often ignored - a rare combination of actor and public intellectual in contemporary Kannada cinema.
