Robin Murphy grew up around filmmaking, as her father Geoff Murphy started making films when she was five years old. She's worked in the New Zealand film industry since 1979, working in various departments as a location manager, assistant director, producer, and production manager, along with roles in the costume, art, sound and additional crew departments.

Her numerous feature film projects range from early features such as the Kiwi classic Goodbye Pork Pie (1980) and Once Were Warriors (1994), and later features such as King Kong (2005) and The Lord of the Rings trilogy, along with Pork Pie (2017) the remake of the 1980 classic with her brother Matt Murphy. Her TV series work includes Outrageous Fortune (2005), Step Dave (2014), Power Rangers Dino Charge (2015), the Sweet Tooth (2021) pilot Out of the Deep Woods (2021), and the Peacock series One of Us Is Lying (2021).

Since the late 90s, Robin has juggled her freelance work with producing short films, and developing feature film scripts. She's produced eight short films, including Run (2007), which was awarded a special jury prize at the Cannes Film Festival in 2007.

In 2016 she launched the first of two seasons of popular web series Pot Luck (2016) with writer/director Ness Simons, and her short film Sparrow (2016) with writer/director Welby Ings, has been officially selected for over 70 film festivals and accrued 16 awards. In 2017 she formed the production company, Fired Up Productions with Ness Simons, with a particular focus on bringing diverse stories to mainstream audiences. In 2019/2020 Fired Up Productions post produced and self-distributed Beatrice Joblin's indie feature film Births, Deaths and Marriages (2019) (NZIFF 2019), into NZ cinemas before, and after the first Covid-19 lockdown.

She made the leap into feature film producing in early 2019, working with her brother Paul Murphy on Lowdown Dirty Criminals (2020). In 2020 she worked with co-producer Catherine Fitzgerald to get Welby Ings debut feature film Punch (2022) into production, working around lockdowns and facing the challenges of production in a Covid-19 environment. After premiering in the NZ International Film festival in July 2022, Punch was released in cinemas in September 2022.
