Bell hooks, born Gloria Jean Watkins, was a significant American author, theorist, and social critic known for exploring the intersections of race, class, and gender. She adopted the pen name "bell hooks" from her great-grandmother, intentionally using lowercase to emphasize her work over her personal identity.

Growing up in segregated Kentucky, hooks's experiences deeply informed her work on oppression and domination. Her writings, accessible yet scholarly, blended personal insights with social and feminist critiques.



hooks earned a PhD and taught at several universities before becoming a Distinguished Professor at Berea College, where she founded the bell hooks Institute in 2014. Her groundbreaking book, *Ain't I a Woman: Black Women and Feminism* (1981), established her as a leading voice in Black feminism, emphasizing the unique experiences of Black women at the intersection of race, gender, and class. hooks analyzed culture, pedagogy, and love through the lens of social justice and equality. She advocated for "engaged pedagogy" and making theory accessible to all. Author of over 40 books, bell hooks received numerous awards and international recognition. Her work continues to be highly influential in contemporary discussions about feminism, race, and social justice.
